A unit is not a glass
One UK unit is 10 ml of pure alcohol, approximately 8 g. It gives beer, wine and spirits a common measure. The size of the glass still matters.
UK units = volume in ml × strength as a percentage × quantity ÷ 1000. MeSober uses this calculation. A 500 ml beer at 5% contains 2.5 units.
What is an alcohol unit? Why countries count differentlyThree pints. Just beer?
Strong IPA adds up. Compare the alcohol, rather than the name on the bottle.
3 UK pints of IPA
3 × ≈568 ml · 7.5% · 12.79 UK units · ≈102 g
1 wine bottle
750 ml · 13% · 9.75 UK units · ≈78 g
Half a 700 ml whisky bottle
350 ml · 40% · 14 UK units · ≈112 g
Examples, not suggested amounts. At 7–8% ABV, three UK pints contain 11.93–13.64 UK units. A US pint is smaller: three at 7.5% contain 10.65 units. Bars compare alcohol content, not overall health risk.
What do the units actually mean?
- 1 UK unit = 10 ml pure alcohol ≈ 8 g.
- 1 Spanish UBE = 10 g. 1 US standard drink = 14 g.
- A glass is a serving. It may contain several units.
WHO: alcohol consumption is not risk-free. Less alcohol means less risk; no universal ‘safe number of units’ is given. WHO
UK guidance: no more than 14 UK units a week regularly; if drinking that much, spread it over at least 3 days. A lower-risk guideline, not a harmless allowance or a target. NHS
