How much alcohol is in that?
One bottle is not always one unit. Let’s do the maths.
Choose a drink type (optional)
Serving sizes vary. Check the actual pour and the ABV on the label. UK and US pints are different sizes.

Fair questions.
Short, honest answers to the things people actually ask.
Can I start after 1 October?
Start today. The days that have already passed do not cancel the ones ahead. Record real days instead of making a perfect-looking calendar.
If I drink, is it all ruined?
Record what happened and carry on. A streak may end; the other alcohol-free days remain in your calendar.
Is MeSober free?
Yes. No subscription, ads or required signup.
Where are my entries stored?
On your device, with optional sync through your iCloud. See the privacy policy for details.
What is an alcohol unit?
A UK unit is 10 ml of pure alcohol, about 8 g. MeSober uses that calculation. A glass and a unit are different things.
Why does Spain show a different number?
A Spanish UBE is 10 g of alcohol; a US standard drink is 14 g. It is the same drink measured with different units.
How much alcohol is in a glass of wine?
That depends on its size and strength. For example, 175 ml at 13% is 2.275 UK units. Enter your pour in the calculator.
Can a voice entry be wrong?
Yes. Review the drinks and quantities before saving. Recognition helps; you decide the final entry.
Does the calculator store my inputs?
No. Values stay in the current tab, are not sent to a server and are not included in analytics.
Is this a medical app?
No. It is a diary and tools for understanding your habits. It does not diagnose or replace a clinician.
Can I suddenly stop drinking?
If you are dependent on alcohol or have withdrawal symptoms, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Get medical help first.
Is MeSober the official Sober October organiser?
No. MeSober is independent. Alcohol Change UK runs the official UK fundraising campaign. Using MeSober does not itself enter you into its fundraiser.
Three pints. Just beer?
Strong IPA adds up. Compare the alcohol, rather than the name on the bottle.
3 UK pints of IPA
3 × ≈568 ml · 7.5% · 12.79 UK units · ≈102 g
1 wine bottle
750 ml · 13% · 9.75 UK units · ≈78 g
Half a 700 ml whisky bottle
350 ml · 40% · 14 UK units · ≈112 g
Examples, not suggested amounts. At 7–8% ABV, three UK pints contain 11.93–13.64 UK units. A US pint is smaller: three at 7.5% contain 10.65 units. Bars compare alcohol content, not overall health risk.
What do the units actually mean?
- 1 UK unit = 10 ml pure alcohol ≈ 8 g.
- 1 Spanish UBE = 10 g. 1 US standard drink = 14 g.
- A glass is a serving. It may contain several units.
WHO: alcohol consumption is not risk-free. Less alcohol means less risk; no universal ‘safe number of units’ is given. WHO
UK guidance: no more than 14 UK units a week regularly; if drinking that much, spread it over at least 3 days. A lower-risk guideline, not a harmless allowance or a target. NHS
