A month is a useful frame
A month has a beginning and an end. That is enough to try a different routine without promising to change your whole life by Monday. Sober October means an alcohol-free October, from the first to the thirty-first.
There is also an official fundraising campaign behind the name. Its participants raise donations, rather than only keep a calendar. Those activities can go together; they are not the same thing.
From Go Sober to today
In 2013, Macmillan Cancer Support announced Go Sober for October. Participants were asked to give up alcohol for a month and invite friends and family to sponsor them. That is part of the format’s history, not the story of MeSober.
Who runs the campaign now?
In 2026, the official UK Sober October campaign is associated with Alcohol Change UK. Its website provides registration, rules and fundraising options. Start there if you want the charity challenge.
MeSober is an independent tracking app. It does not register you in the official campaign or collect donations on its behalf.
Your October can be straightforward
Choose a clear period. Mark the days that were genuinely alcohol-free and record the others honestly. If you start on the second, fifth or tenth, today is still available.
A calendar is useful when you can understand what happened. It does not have to look perfect. Sober October is a practical reason to start keeping one.
